Laura Roy Art: About

A longstanding curiosity in the world and an interest in the overlap of art & science has marked Laura's life. She seeks to understand truth through her work, even when that means playing with the imagination.

Laura loves experiencing the world through sight, sound, taste, and smell, which is the basis for much of her work. She has a particular interest in memory which has led her to investigate the links of smell/taste to memory in her art, à la Marcel Proust's Madeleine. A subtle aroma or a bite of food can bring back memory long forgotten.

As a medical illustrator in addition to being a fine artist, Laura's interest in memory has also driven much of her choice to focus on the brain in her medical work—primarily creating illustrations that relate to the brain and often the areas related to memory.

Laura attempts to create work that is evocative of the ephemeral and constantly shifting nature of experience and memory. She finds watercolor is an excellent choice for this in its opportunity for loose washes and vivid colors. More recently, Laura has been focusing on oil painting to stay loose and incorporate a more textural element into her work. A current series also brings the two together to suggest new meaning.

Laura currently splits her time between Manhattan and Iowa—two wonderfully different locations. She lives with her husband, Jeremy (also an artist). You can view more of his work at jeremyroyart.com.
